Radiography Permit Software for Oil & Gas NDT
A customizable controlled-area checklist, source verification, dosimetry tracking, boundary survey capture, and offline authorization. Built for NDT crews running Iridium-192 and Cobalt-60 exposures on pipelines, vessels, and wellsite inspections.
What Is Radiography Permit Software?
Radiography permit software digitizes the authorization workflow NDT crews use before any industrial radiographic exposure — pipeline weld inspections, vessel integrity checks, casing tests. The permit captures the source type and activity, the controlled area boundary survey, the dosimetry verification, and the digital signatures from the radiographer and supervisor.
Industrial radiography is regulated under 10 CFR 34 in NRC-jurisdiction states and equivalent state programs in agreement states. Both require written procedures, dosimetry, controlled area surveys, qualified radiographer licensing, and incident reporting. BasinCheck captures the documentation side of these requirements so your NDT subcontract work is always audit-ready.
Because every BasinCheck audit checklist is a customizable template, you can build separate radiography templates for Iridium-192 pipeline work, Cobalt-60 heavy-wall vessel work, X-ray generator setups, or any combination your crews run. Template edits take minutes.
Where Paper Radiography Permits Fall Apart
These are the gaps that show up during NRC / state radiation control audits and radiography incident investigations.
Common Paper Permit Problems
- Source activity and shot count recorded on paper, never photographed against the source certificate
- Controlled area boundary 'set' with no survey meter readings at the posted limits
- Dosimetry verification verbal — no photos of personal dosimeters or alarming rate meters
- Utility notification and area clearance documented separately from the permit
- No record of the source return-to-shield verification at the end of the job
- Operator audit requests radiography records and the paperwork is gone
What BasinCheck Gives You for Radiography
Everything you need to authorize, monitor, and close radiographic work — built on customizable audit templates and operated from a phone.
Highly Customizable — Build Your Radiography Template
BasinCheck does not ship a dedicated radiography JSA template — this is a specialized, regulated permit type (10 CFR 34 / state agreement agency rules) and the hazards depend on source type and exposure geometry. Every BasinCheck audit checklist is a customizable template: clone hot work or confined space, add radiography-specific items, and publish to your NDT crews in minutes.
Source Verification Capture
Capture the source type (Iridium-192, Cobalt-60, or X-ray), the source serial number, activity in Ci, and exposure device inspection status with photos tied to the permit. Every shot references the same source record for a complete chain of custody.
Controlled Area Boundary Documentation
Record survey meter readings at each boundary point with photo evidence of the meter display. Document the high radiation, restricted, and exclusion zones against the applicable dose limits. The boundary map stays tied to the permit for the full audit trail.
Dosimetry Verification Before Authorization
Every permit requires photo evidence of personal dosimeters, alarming rate meters, and pocket dosimeters for each crew member before the permit can authorize. The permit cannot move forward if a blocking item fails (missing dosimeter, expired calibration, dead battery).
Offline-First on Rig Sites
Radiographers can authorize permits, survey boundaries, and document every shot fully offline. Every signed permit syncs when connectivity returns with cryptographically signed operation logs for tamper-evident compliance. Essential for remote pipeline and wellsite NDT.
Auto-Generated Corrective Actions
Boundary breach, missing dosimeter, source not verified in shielded position, dose-limit event — any failed checklist item auto-generates a tracked corrective action with an owner, due date, and required evidence on resolution.
The Radiography Permit Lifecycle
Every radiographic job follows the same five stages. BasinCheck manages each one with the full audit trail attached to the permit record.
Plan
Before any radiographic inspection, the supervisor identifies the source type (Iridium-192, Cobalt-60, or X-ray generator), the source activity, the shot count, the exposure geometry, and the proposed controlled area boundary. The plan is captured in the permit record before any setup begins.
Survey
The radiographer sets up the controlled area using survey meter readings at the boundary. High radiation area, restricted area, and exclusion zone limits are documented against 10 CFR 34 / state equivalent. Each boundary reading is captured with a photo of the survey meter display.
Authorize
The permit is submitted with digital signatures from the lead radiographer, the assistant, and the area supervisor. Dosimetry verification (personal dosimeter, alarming rate meter, pocket dosimeter) is captured as photos before the permit authorizes. Non-radiographer personnel are cleared from the controlled area.
Expose
Exposures proceed within the authorized shot count and boundary. Any boundary breach, survey meter alarm, or unexpected event triggers an immediate stop-exposure through the same record. The activity log captures every shot with timestamp and location.
Secure
After the final exposure, the radiographer secures the source, verifies it is in the shielded position via survey meter, and locks the storage container. The closed permit lives in the audit trail permanently — searchable, exportable, linked to any corrective actions or dose-limit events from the job.
