Line Breaking Permit Software for Oil & Gas
A customizable checklist for isolation, depressurization, purging, and drain-down. LOTO integration, photo evidence at every isolation point, purge reading capture, and offline authorization. Built for oilfield crews breaking containment on sour-gas, hydrocarbon, and chemical lines.
What Is Line Breaking Permit Software?
Line breaking permit software digitizes the authorization workflow before any hydrocarbon, sour gas, or chemical process line is opened for maintenance, inspection, or modification. It captures the line contents, the isolation points, the LOTO sequence, the depressurization and purge readings, and the digital signatures required before the crew breaks containment.
In oilfield and midstream operations, line breaking is one of the highest-hazard permit types — the consequences of getting it wrong include exposure to H2S, hydrocarbon fires, chemical splash, and pipeline releases. Most facilities require a written line breaking permit alongside hot work, confined space, and LOTO as part of a full control-of-work program.
BasinCheck does not ship a one-size-fits-all line breaking template — the hazards vary too much by line contents and facility. Instead, every BasinCheck audit checklist is a customizable template you can clone and adapt to the specific process lines at your site in minutes.
Where Paper Line Breaking Permits Fall Apart
These are the gaps that show up during operator audits and line-break incident investigations.
Common Paper Permit Problems
- Line contents 'confirmed' verbally without looking at the P&ID or operator signoff
- Isolation points noted on paper but never photographed for evidence
- Purge readings captured in a notebook that doesn't make it to the permit
- LOTO procedure tracked separately from the line breaking permit, never linked
- Draining to 'the usual place' without a designated containment captured in writing
- Operator audit requests line breaking records and the paperwork is gone
What BasinCheck Gives You for Line Breaking
Everything you need to authorize, monitor, and close line breaking work — built on customizable audit templates and operated from a phone.
Highly Customizable — Build Your Line Breaking Template
BasinCheck does not ship a dedicated line breaking JSA template — the hazards vary too much by line contents and facility. Instead, every BasinCheck audit checklist is a customizable template: clone the hot work or confined space template as a starting point, add line-breaking-specific items, and publish to your crews. Template edits take minutes.
LOTO Integration for Isolation Points
BasinCheck ships with an Electrical Work (LOTO) JSA system template covering energy isolation. Attach LOTO procedures directly to the line breaking permit so crews document every locked valve, every bled line, and every zero-pressure verification as part of the same workflow.
Purge Reading Capture
Capture O2, LEL, H2S, and any facility-specific purge readings against the acceptance criteria before the permit authorizes opening. Every reading is timestamped, GPS-tagged, and attached to the permit. Out-of-range readings trigger blocking corrective actions.
Photo Evidence at Every Isolation Point
Every isolation point, every lock, every tag, every pressure gauge reading zero — captured with photos tied to the specific permit record. No more debates about whether a valve was actually closed during an incident investigation.
Offline-First on Rig Sites
Supervisors can issue permits, crews can document isolation points and purge readings, and the whole workflow runs fully offline. Every signed permit syncs when connectivity returns with cryptographically signed operation logs for tamper-evident compliance.
Auto-Generated Corrective Actions
Missing isolation photo, out-of-range purge reading, incomplete LOTO, missing PPE — any failed checklist item auto-generates a tracked corrective action with an owner, due date, and required photo evidence on resolution. Blocking failures prevent permit authorization until resolved.
The Line Breaking Permit Lifecycle
Every line breaking job follows the same five stages. BasinCheck manages each one with the full audit trail attached to the permit record.
Plan
Before any process line is opened, the supervisor identifies the line contents (hydrocarbon, H2S, sour gas, produced water, chemical), the operating pressure and temperature, the isolation points, and the downstream drain-down path. The plan is captured in the permit record before any isolation begins.
Isolate
Double block and bleed valves are closed, locked, and tagged following the LOTO procedure. Every isolation point is photographed with the lock/tag visible. Bleed valves are verified open. The pressure gauge reads zero. Every check is captured with timestamp and user.
Depressurize & Purge
The isolated section is depressurized and purged with nitrogen, steam, or another inert medium as the hazard profile requires. Purge readings (O2, LEL, H2S) are captured against the acceptance criteria. Only once readings are in range does the permit authorize opening.
Open
The line is opened with the required PPE (chemical suit, SCBA or supplied-air respirator, face shield). The crew drains residual contents to the designated containment. Atmospheric readings continue throughout the opening. Any out-of-range reading triggers an immediate stop-work through the same record.
Close
After the work is complete and the line is re-assembled, the permit closes with final pressure testing, leak checks, and a LOTO removal sequence. The closed permit lives in the audit trail permanently — searchable, exportable, linked to any corrective actions from the job.
