TRIR Calculator

The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) measures workplace safety performance by calculating the number of OSHA-recordable injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers per year. Using the standard formula (Recordables × 200,000 ÷ Total Hours Worked), TRIR helps oil and gas contractors track safety metrics and meet operator prequalification requirements. Most operators set TRIR thresholds between 0.5 and 1.5 for contractor eligibility.

Excellent: Below 0.5
Acceptable: Below 1.0

This calculator uses the standard OSHA formula: TRIR = (Recordables × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked. Common operator thresholds range from 0.5 to 1.5 depending on the operator and contract type. For 3-year rolling TRIR calculations and EMR integration, see BasinCheck full features.

The TRIR Formula Explained

TRIR = (Recordable Incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked

The 200,000 constant represents 100 full-time equivalent employees working 40 hours per week for 50 weeks. This standardization allows comparison across companies of different sizes.

Example: A company with 5 recordable incidents and 750,000 total hours worked would have a TRIR of (5 × 200,000) ÷ 750,000 = 1.33

Common Operator TRIR Thresholds

Major Operators

Large operators like Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell often require TRIR below 1.0, with some high-risk work requiring below 0.5.

ISNetworld/Veriforce

Contractor management systems display your TRIR prominently. Operators can filter contractors by safety metrics including 3-year rolling TRIR.

About Thresholds

TRIR thresholds vary by operator, region, and work type. High-risk activities (drilling, well intervention) often have stricter requirements than lower-risk support services. Always verify specific requirements with the operator's contractor management team or ISNetworld.

TRIR Calculator FAQ

Common questions about Total Recordable Incident Rate calculations

TRIR, or Total Recordable Incident Rate, is a safety metric that measures the number of OSHA-recordable injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers per year. It's calculated using the formula: TRIR = (Number of Recordables × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked. The 200,000 constant represents 100 employees working 40 hours per week for 50 weeks.

Automate Your Safety Metrics

Stop calculating TRIR manually. BasinCheck tracks incidents, calculates rates, and generates the reports operators need.
